What is AVODART and what is it used for?

AVODART 5 belongs to a group of drugs called alpha-reductase enzyme inhibitors and is used in men with benign prostatic enlargement.

Benign prostatic enlargement (BPH) is a non-cancerous enlargement of the prostate gland that surrounds the urethra (urine-carrying channel) and is located below the bladder. In men with benign prostate enlargement, the prostate gland grows large enough to compress the urinary canal. When the urinary tract is compressed, it becomes narrow, the normal passage of urine becomes difficult, and some or all of the following symptoms can be noticed.

Difficulty starting to urinate

Blocked, weak urine discharge

• More frequent urination, especially at night

Jamming, oozing or drip

The feeling that the bladder (bladder) is not completely emptied

As the disease progresses, untreated BPH increases the risk of complete blockage of urine flow (acute urinary retention due to inability to urinate) and / or the need for surgery.

Prostate enlargement is caused by a hormone called dihydrotestosterone (DHT) in the blood. When AVODART is used in combination with another type of drug called alpha blocker, it decreases the production of DHT in the body, causing the enlarged prostate to shrink and alleviate the symptoms. However, if your prostate has been enlarged for a long time, it may take time to reduce its size and correct its symptoms.

Your doctor can test your blood to look for PSA (prostate specific antigen). The results of the test and other factors, such as your age and family history of prostate cancer, will help your doctor decide whether you are likely to develop prostate cancer.
3. How to use AVODART?
Instructions for proper use and dose / frequency of administration

Take your medicine as directed by your doctor. If you have any doubts about how and how long you should take the capsules, ask your doctor or pharmacist.

The usual dose is 1 AVODART capsule (0.5 mg) taken orally once a day on an empty or full stomach. The capsules should be swallowed whole and not chewed or opened.

It is important that you continue to take AVODART soft capsules as long as your doctor tells you to take them, even if you do not see the benefit immediately. While some men get better symptoms early, others need to continue using AVODART for 3-6 months to see if it is beneficial for them. You should continue to take your medication even if your symptoms improve. Continue to take your medicine until your doctor tells you.

Application route and method

Swallow AVODART capsules with some water. Do not open or chew the capsules. Contact with the contents of the capsules can cause pain in your mouth and throat.
